Jhonson - John Williams of Malayalam Cinema
It is a well known fact that there is no category in National Film awards of India for background score. But it is surprising and good to know that Johnson has won the National award twice for his background scores for the movies Ponthan Mada (Malayalam) in 1994 and for Sukrutham (Malayalam) in 1995. But having known this, I am surprised that no one else was awarded before or after that for background score and no category for background score is introduced yet. I am eager to watch these two Malayalam movies to see what is so great about the score of Jhonson that made the jury to specially recognize him.

True, background score does not have any formal recognition in our National Film awards. If there had been such a category, we would all be very happy for the composers of all those background scores which we love. I personally would have been very happy to see Ilaiyaraaja getting at least a few more national awards. (I feel, in terms of awards, Raaja has been under-recognised.)
venky - True. IR is under-recognized. He has won only one Filmfare award (for Heyram) so far for his background score.
